What Are Asteroids?
You have probably heard of the planets. The Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars—these are the familiar bodies that move through the zodiac. They shape the broad themes of personality, the outer story, and the parts of a chart most people recognize.
Asteroids are different. They are smaller bodies, many orbiting between Mars and Jupiter, each carrying a name drawn from mythology, history, literature, folklore, science, and human experience. Individually they may seem insignificant, but together they reveal a remarkable symbolic language.
What if these ancient stories are more than stories? What if they are archetypes that continue to live within us?
Astrologically, the asteroids speak to experiences the planets rarely name: the wound you carry, the promise that was broken, the exile, the obsession, the sacrifice, the temptation, the gift, and the thread you cannot cut. Where the planets describe the broad architecture of a life, the asteroids often reveal its finer details. Where the planets tell the story you show the world, the asteroids often tell the story you keep hidden.
Why Asteroids for Shadow Work?
Carl Jung wrote, "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate."
The asteroids provide a symbolic language for exploring that unconscious material. Nessus speaks of inherited cycles of abuse. Lilith reveals the refusal to submit. Chariklo quietly holds space while others heal. Sedna tells the story of betrayal, abandonment, and transformation. Each asteroid offers another doorway into the hidden landscape of the psyche.
These asteroids do not predict who you will become. Instead, they illuminate the archetypal forces that may shape your challenges, your choices, and your opportunities for growth.
How to Work with Asteroids in a Chart
The Demon Inside app examines the relationships between the asteroids and your Sun, Moon, and Ascendant—the three most personal points in the birth chart. When an asteroid forms a close aspect to one of these points, its story becomes part of your own.
The app then measures the Shadow Density created by these active archetypes, placing them within one of fifteen Shadow Density Levels. The result is not a prediction of your future or a judgment of your character. It is a map of the archetypal challenges present within the chart.
The asteroids do not provide easy answers. They provide better questions.
The Demon Inside Asteroid Deck
The Demon Inside is a tool for exploring those questions. Each card is named after an asteroid, illustrated with historical woodcuts, and paired with a shadow expression that captures its core archetype.
The app identifies the asteroids most active within a chart. The deck and guidebook allow you to explore them further through mythology, interpretation, reflection, and shadow work.
